What is virtual instructor-led training?

Oriel STAT A MATRIX’s virtual instructor-led training (VILT) is a live web-based learning experience where the instructor and learners are in separate locations.

Oriel STAT A MATRIX’s VILT technology platform is designed to ensure similar interaction as a traditional in-person classroom experience and allows for 2-way dialogue, break-out sessions for engaging workshops and hands-on exercises, and group work using virtual breakout rooms. This provides for an engaging learning experience in which participants can connect with the content and interact with both the instructor and other learners.

How is VILT different than a webinar?

VILT is interactive, and participant engagement is high. Webinars are typically a speaker with listeners muted, and then time for Q&A at the end of the lecture. They do not provide for engaged learning like a VILT.  Webinars are traditionally 120 minutes or less that provides a high-level overview of the content that is presented.  Our training is much more than an overview, it is designed to transfer skills and knowledge to the students, which allows them to apply what they learned in the VILT to their workplace.

How is this different than eLearning?

eLearning is self-paced independent learning. The key distinction between eLearning and VILT is VILT involves a group of learners, happens in real-time and provides for instructor / student engagement.

Is this class different than the in-person version of the class?

The learning objectives and topics covered during our VILT classes are the same as for the corresponding in-person version of the classes. Just like our in-person training, a significant portion of class time is spent on interactive exercises, workshops, and real-life case studies. Feedback from our students is that those activities and workshops really drive home the learning.

It’s important to note, however, that in order to accommodate a virtual setting, the pace at which the VILTs are delivered – as well as the structure of class workshops and exercises – have been modified to support engagement in a virtual format. Our virtual learning instructional designers have had special training to ensure that the VILT learning they create is both effective and applies different tools and approaches that are optimal for the virtual classroom. This results in a different type of experience. We don’t simply take an in-person class and hope it works virtually – we specially design our training for the virtual platform.

All VILT classes are taught by the same, experienced team of instructors you’ve come to expect from Oriel STAT A MATRIX. Our team of VILT instructors are trained in virtual facilitation - ensuring a lively, interactive learning experience.

What about the instructors?

Just because an instructor is great in an in-person classroom doesn’t mean he or she will be great in virtual training. Oriel STAT A MATRIX takes a lot of time to assess how each of our trainers performs in a virtual classroom – only the instructors who excel in this format area are approved to teach our VILTs. These VILT instructors are part of the same experienced team you’ve come to expect from Oriel STAT A MATRIX and have received additional training in virtual class facilitation.

Who is the producer, and what does this person do?

In addition to the trainer, each VILT class has a producer, who ensures a smooth learning experience for our VILT attendees. This role is 100% unique to the virtual classroom platform.

The producer:

  • Uses the virtual classroom technology to communicate often with participants and “see” how they are doing.
  • Facilitates exercises and workshops to ensure you get the most from our interactive course design.
  • Manages the technology and can troubleshoot any issues you have, right on the spot, so you don’t miss out on any learning and the course instructor isn’t distracted from the training.

The producer plays a critical role in the learners’ experience. It would be problematic if a VILT didn’t have a producer, because we want our instructors to focus solely on teaching you. Having a producer assist the instructor ensures a successful online experience for all.

This consideration of VILT best practices is one of the benefits of our virtual course design, and is one of the many reasons why Oriel STAT A MATRIX gives students the hands-down best learning experience out there.

What is the typical training schedule for VILT seminar?

VILT courses are constructed from 50-minute modules. We deliver no more than 5 modules during a session. With the addition of breaks - and time to transition from activities - each session works out to about 4 hours each day. As an example, a 3-day in-person seminar would transform into roughly 20 to 25 modules over 5 days of virtual training. Sessions are held on consecutive days. We find this keeps participant involvement and retention at its highest.

For public seminars, classes run daily 1:00-5:00 p.m. Eastern time. Virtual seminars are typically delivered across 4 or 5 days. Classes that include a final exam are extended by 1.5-hours on the final day and run 11:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Times can be more flexible for private sessions; however, we do prefer to stick with 4 hours per day. Course agendas provide additional schedule information as well as detailed information about what is covered during each session. You can find these agendas on each course page of our website, /training.

What do I need to participate in a VILT class?

First and foremost, your enthusiasm. In addition, course participants are required to have their own PC or laptop with a high-speed internet connection. We recommend a headset with microphone, video capability, and the ability to participate in the training from a private, quiet setting. If possible, have two monitors; one for the virtual classroom and the other for viewing training materials. Dual monitors may be helpful but are not required.

Do I need to buy any special equipment to participate in the training?

We strongly recommend that all participants use a headset.  This will enable you to communicate with the instructor and other attendees during your Seminar. Ideally, your headset should have the following characteristics:

  • USB connection, with plug-and-play capability (i.e..., with the software driver included)
  • A built-in microphone with noise-cancelling capabilities
  • Clear digital stereo headphone audio

What are the interactive features?

Our virtual learning platform allows you to speak to and/or chat message with the instructor and other attendees. You can also share files, view the instructor’s desktop, ask questions, tell the instructor to speak louder, softer, slow down, etc. (through simple icons). You'll see what your instructor is writing, view and hear questions and comments from other attendees, and be able to work in subgroups using whiteboards and other tools.  A headset is required for optimal communication throughout the virtual seminar.

How far in advance do I need to register for my seminar?

The earlier the better.  That way, you’ll have time to acquire your headset before the first lesson and have plenty of time to do any course prework. Class size is limited, and classes do fill up.

To qualify for CEU credits, and to receive your course certificate, participants must register for and attend each session of the training as measured by your log-in for the entire seminar, speaking in the sessions and participating in all of the chat, polling, and breakout exercises are required.

How is the final exam administered for Certified classes?

For classes requiring a final examination, the exam is administered in an online format during the last 2 hours of the training class. Access to the exam link is provided by the instructor through the virtual classroom. The test is open book and each participant is given up to 2 hours to complete it. Students who do not demonstrate competency on the exam will receive a Certificate of Attendance along with a Student Feedback Report indicating areas to focus on for a successful exam result.
