It starts with a foundational management system (e.g. ISO 9000 and related standards), the main purpose of which is to ensure that the organization’s processes are effective in satisfying customer requirements and expectations and achieving regulatory compliance where applicable. Recognizing that effectiveness alone does not guarantee sound business performance, the path includes process improvement methodologies that add efficiency to process performance (Lean Six Sigma). Nevertheless, effectiveness and efficiency applied to specific processes or groups of processes do not guarantee sound business performance either. It is like an orchestra that underperforms despite the superb skills of its musicians. There is no particular starting point for applying the SPM methodology. For example, if an organization is already certified to ISO 9001 and has a mature Lean Six Sigma initiative, the SPM wheel can be overlaid on the existing program to ensure better focus, alignment, and sustainability. If an organization is starting from scratch, the SPM wheel can serve as a roadmap for designing and deploying an effective and efficient management system.
