About The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award

The Malcolm Baldrige Award was created in 1988 and is based on the integrated and aligned systems model, which was the first clearly delineated and internationally recognized total quality management (TQM) model.

The Baldrige award was developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce to encourage organizations to embrace the principles and practices of TQM and thus increase their competitiveness.

In 1992, a model akin to that of the Baldrige Award was created by the European Foundation of Quality Management and is now the basis for the European Quality Award.

The Baldrige Model focuses on operational excellence at the strategic level, having management systems as a solid foundation.

The following illustration shows how the Baldrige Framework relates to improvement methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma. Additionally, the Baldrige Program's directive notes the following: "The Baldrige Criteria, Lean, and Six Sigma are complementary, not mutually exclusive.’’ Many organizations use the Baldrige framework to develop an overall performance map to identify areas that need improvement, and then they use Lean and Six Sigma to redesign or improve their processes.
